My girlfriends are donating their eggs. Should I?

One of Tara’s favorite things? Thursday morning coffee dates with her best girlfriend Carrie.

The conversation, comradery and café lattes are second to none and last week was no different – except that Carrie had some big news to reveal.

“I donated my eggs!” Carrie exclaimed.

Tara almost spat her latte all over the table. “What?!” she blurted. “Like from your ovaries?”

Carrie started nodding like a giddy schoolgirl.

Suddenly, Tara’s mind filled with question after question after question, and a myriad of emotions went through her as she sat listening to Carrie describe her journey through egg donation. Every detail piqued her curiosity a little more, but after the coffee date was over, Tara was left with more than a few unanswered questions, and craved more information.

Sound familiar?

If you’ve found yourself in Tara’s shoes lately, keep reading.

Egg donation is more common than you think. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 1 in 10 IVF procedures today include a donor egg. This means you probably have more than one friend that has donated her eggs.

But the question still looms: is egg donation for you? If you answer yes to the below questions, you might be a good candidate.

1. Are you looking to give back through a non-traditional avenue?

Giving back to a cause you believe in is rewarding, especially when you can see the good that comes from it. With egg donation, you are literally helping another woman grow her family – what can be more rewarding than donating a piece of yourself in an effort to help someone else? *Goose bumps!*

2. Do you want to make a positive social impact?

By donating your eggs, you are helping create all types of families – from straight, to lesbian, to gay, to transgender. Your eggs are playing a part in two people who love each other make a life – that’s pretty powerful. As a donor, you are helping shape the future of our culture. Love is love, right?

3. Has someone close to you benefited from an egg donor?

Did you have an older sister or friend who suffered with infertility and needed a donor egg but at the time you weren’t of age to donate? Now is as good a time as any to donate! And if you can’t help your sister, you can help another woman – a sister, daughter and hopeful mother!

4. Do you want to give the gift of life?

Donating your eggs is fairly simple for you but incredibly life-changing for the recipient. We don’t mean to get deep here, but donating your eggs is literally giving another person the gift of life. You can’t buy that on Amazon.

Did you find yourself nodding ‘yes’ to the majority of these questions? You might also be interested to know that becoming an egg donor has a financial benefit. Because you are worth it.

So maybe it’s time for you to find out more about egg donation. If you are between the ages of 21-31, in good health and are willing to take the plunge, then don’t wait! We don’t think Tara will.
